Reviews of Broonland

‘An impish romp through the new Labour era... Harvie’s unique skill is in having an eye for the curious connections between making money and making culture. This is a racy read and the ideas shoot out of the pages like a Thompson machine-gun.’ – George Kerevan, Scotsman, 20 March 2010

‘The citizens deserve nothing less than robust political biography with their cornflakes. This is exactly what Christopher Harvie’s Broonland provides, in a capacious critique of this most complex of British politicians. Harvie’s German experience tells him that skilfully making stuff is the foundation for civic health. Parading around in the tatters of the Union Jack is no substitute.’ – Pat Kane, Independent, 26 March 2010

Welcome to the official website of Professor Christopher Harvie MSP

A Message from Chris Harvie:

Thanks for homing in on my new website. This site is the 'front of house' for my literary and cultural interests, carrying current articles and reviews by me and about my books and public life in Scotland and Europe.

This site succeeds my archive site Intelligent Mr Toad which covers my academic and teaching career (see the bottom of this page and the Academic section). Much of my political life as an SNP MSP is covered in the Politics section and the Kirkcaldy SNP and Scottish Parliament sites.

I hope you will enjoy using this website and find it informative and useful.

The world has held great Heroes,
As history-books have showed;
But never a name to go down to fame
Compared with that of Toad!

The clever men at Oxford
Know all there is to be knowed.
But they none of them know one half as much
As intelligent Mr Toad!

"The toad, unlike the skylark and the primrose, has never had much of a boost from the poets." (George Orwell)

Intelligent Mr Toad, made famous by Kenneth Grahame, is the custodian of Professor Harvie’s Tübingen Landeskunde (Regional Studies) website. Mr Toad links up the Landeskunde teaching programme, Welsh Studies in Germany, the Wales in a Regional Europe (WiRE) research programme and the annual Freudenstadt colloquium on Regionalism.
